Herengracht 23 Purmerend

How It Started

Friday 5 January 2024 I got the keys of my new home, Herengracht 23 Purmerend, a municipal monument desigend in 1908 by the famous Dutch architect J.J.P Oud in cooperation with the structural engineer C. Groenhart. The original name of the house is ‘Huize Purmerstein’

Because the last renovation was performed 55 years ago, I decided to buy the house and fully renovate it to modern standards with respect to the original 1908 design and include sustainability measures aiming for a A+(+) energy label. This website and blog is maintained by me to update you the coming 6-12 months about my project.

About The History

The Original Design By J.J.P Oud

Jacobus Johannes Pieter (Ko) Oud (Purmerend, 9 February 1890 – Wassenaar, 5 April 1963) was a Dutch architect, who became known as a member of art movement De Stijl and advocate of modern architecture. His significance as a pioneer of new building is equal to that of Le Corbusier and Gropius, but he was one of the first to turn away from this movement in the mid-1930s, believing it had very little to do with architecture. As a result, he lost the prestige he had abroad, while in the Netherlands he still received many important commissions, such as those for the National Monument and the monument on the Grebbeberg Military Field of Honour. His brother Pieter Oud was mayor of the municipality of Rotterdam.

J.J.P Oud designed this house when he was 18 years old. The inspiration of the design lies in his childhood home at Herengracht 14, Purmerend.

The plans

During the past 115 years the house has survived serveral events like the flooding of 1916. Also internal renovations where performed around 1935 and 1968 in which all original 1908 design has been replaced with modern time insights.

I plan to rewind all internal modifications and start from scratch with renovating the house to current standards and take sustainability measures with respect to the original design
